To my way of thinking the biggest advantage monolights possess is just that—if you’re shooting on location or for that matter anywhere and the power pack in a pack and head system stops working, so do you. If you have a couple of monolights and one of them fails, you can still shoot. The kit consists of two 500 watt second (ws) monolights, a Skyport Universal Radio Transmitter, two 25.5” square Portalite light banks, two Manfrotto (367B ECO) 9-foot light stands, two 16-foot sync cords, plus a pair of nicely made cases for the light stands and monolights that far exceed the standards for cases normally included in kits. The monolight carrying case is extremely well made and should work well for heading to the job in your car, but if you need something rugged and shippable you’ll want to spring for one of Lightware’s ( www.lightwareinc.com ) or similar strobe head cases. The second monolight, also with a Portalite, was at camera left and at the very back of my (not all that long) camera room. As I discovered, merely unlocking using that hard plastic rotating collar on the front of the BXRi 500 won’t do it, you also need to push the protective cover in—hard—then rotate counterclockwise to remove it. (This is the only place you will find this tip: ladies, be careful, Mary broke a nail trying unsuccessfully to remove the cover.) What you will find in the User’s Guide is an instruction to assemble the Portalite light bank before attaching it to the monolight. That’s good advice, so be sure to take it. While the rated recycle time is 1.45 seconds (full power) and 0.34 seconds (at minimum power), I got perfectly exposed shots as fast as I could click the shutter when working with lights at settings ranging from medium to full power. Pose, click, fire. When the lights are ready they are really ready, making them a perfect choice for event and wedding photographers who often have to move fast because posing for pictures is just part of that day’s planned activities. The Elinchroms won’t let you down. That versatility and solid European design makes the Elinchrom BXRi 500 To Go kit the perfect choice for the photographer on the go. He said, “It’s better to have a real person than a model who might distract from the point. Sometimes I like the test shots so much they are submitted with the review, as is the case here. Lighting is from the two Elinchrom BXRi 500 monolights with 25.5” square Portalite light banks mounted. He’s even gone as far as to create special Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It Lighting kits that consist of Elinchrom BX 500 Ri monolights and light modifiers.I was blown away by the size of this kit. Everything fits into two very small, light, shoulder strap equipped, carrying cases. When I say everything, I’m talking about two 500 watt monolights, two power cables, two speed rings, two soft boxes, two Manfrotto light stands, Skyport wireless trigger, and sync cables for non-wireless triggering. The light stands go in a separate custom case. Normal camera pack on your back, then one case slung over each shoulder and you’re good to go. The size and form factor is typically for a monolight.
One special note; even though these lights are just like most other monolights and have a fan built in to cool them off, they are almost dead silent while running. One of the biggest unseen features in the built-in wireless trigger using Elinchrom’s Skyport wireless triggers. The kit includes the hotshoe Skyport model to attach to your camera to trigger the flashes. Of special note about this Skyport is the ability to increase or decrease the strobes power output directly from the hot shoe module. Think about when doing initial test shots for a shoot; you might have to walk over to each strobe and change the power several times before you nail the lighting. To be able to do this without moving is quite nice. These are where my biggest issues with this kit lie. Although the construction of these soft boxes are top notch, the single diffusion panel on them doesn’t seem to diffuse the light as much as I would like. The light coming from them tends to create more shadows from your subject than I prefer. If I were to be keeping this kit, I would probably have to replace the included light modifiers with something else. I used the kit for a client shoot in their home and to be able to take just one trip from the car to their house was very nice and even felt more professional. This instead of making multiple trips to carry in loads of gear that can overwhelm a client by seeing how much is needed for their shoot. From 2 unsuspecting small cases, to fully setup and ready to shoot can be accomplished in about 10 minutes. The hardest part is putting together the soft boxes but that is typical of most speed ring style light modifiers. That includes being able to remotely change the power output of the strobes and modeling lights for different groups of lights. Again, to be able to change power output of your lights without moving from your shooting position or having an assistant do that that for you is a huge advantage.
Most wireless trigger systems, no matter how much they cost, will have some misfires. One note about the ability to wireless change power output; there is no LCD display on the hotshoe module so there is no way to see exactly what the power output is on your lights. This can come into play when the back of the lights are out of your line of sight. No soft boxes. That would really propel this kit to the next level of recommendation. I found myself missing the light from the recently reviewed Photogenic soft box and unfortunately, the speed ring sizes were different. The first is to purchase the gear little by little and slowly build your kit up. The other way is to wait a little longer and save up to purchase a kit that will have everything you want. Personally, I went the first path but if I had to go back and do it again I would choose the second. One of the biggest would be knowing that everything will play nice together right out of the box. Oddly enough, I had a reader email me with questions about what kit he should buy with the budget he had which happen to be right around what this kit cost. I responded to him with a very strong recommendation for this kit. It won’t destroy your bank account while giving you many of the features only available on much higher gear. Things like compact design and transportation cases, wireless, wired, and optical triggers, wireless power output control, audible beep to signify flash ready, and many more. This is what happens: I have 2 strobes, (mostly set at the same level as my clients demand flat lighting), It doesn't matter if I use the Skyport transmitter or Pocket Wizards (just want to make it clear that this is not a triggering issue), I am shooting around 160 images in each set (about 10 sets a day), and during any of those sets one of the two strobes will decide to take 10-15 seconds to recycle, so I shoot without realising one hasn't recycled yet, and I just get a flash from the remaining strobe. Then further down the line, the same will happen with the alternate unit. If I wait for that 10-15 seconds, then I get the beep to indicate the strobe is charged and I can then shoot away until it decides to do it again down the line. I'd say in each 160 shots, this is happening 2-3 times between the 2 units, and they never both do it on the same shutter release, it appears totally random. One special note; even though these lights are just like most other monolights and have a fan built in to cool them off, they are almost dead silent while running. One of the biggest unseen features in the built-in wireless trigger using Elinchrom’s Skyport wireless triggers. The kit includes the hotshoe Skyport model to attach to your camera to trigger the flashes. Of special note about this Skyport is the ability to increase or decrease the strobes power output directly from the hot shoe module. Think about when doing initial test shots for a shoot; you might have to walk over to each strobe and change the power several times before you nail the lighting. To be able to do this without moving is quite nice. These are where my biggest issues with this kit lie. Although the construction of these soft boxes are top notch, the single diffusion panel on them doesn’t seem to diffuse the light as much as I would like. The light coming from them tends to create more shadows from your subject than I prefer. If I were to be keeping this kit, I would probably have to replace the included light modifiers with something else. I used the kit for a client shoot in their home and to be able to take just one trip from the car to their house was very nice and even felt more professional. This instead of making multiple trips to carry in loads of gear that can overwhelm a client by seeing how much is needed for their shoot. From 2 unsuspecting small cases, to fully setup and ready to shoot can be accomplished in about 10 minutes. The hardest part is putting together the soft boxes but that is typical of most speed ring style light modifiers. That includes being able to remotely change the power output of the strobes and modeling lights for different groups of lights. Again, to be able to change power output of your lights without moving from your shooting position or having an assistant do that that for you is a huge advantage.
Most wireless trigger systems, no matter how much they cost, will have some misfires. One note about the ability to wireless change power output; there is no LCD display on the hotshoe module so there is no way to see exactly what the power output is on your lights. This can come into play when the back of the lights are out of your line of sight. No soft boxes. That would really propel this kit to the next level of recommendation. I found myself missing the light from the recently reviewed Photogenic soft box and unfortunately, the speed ring sizes were different. The first is to purchase the gear little by little and slowly build your kit up. The other way is to wait a little longer and save up to purchase a kit that will have everything you want. Personally, I went the first path but if I had to go back and do it again I would choose the second. One of the biggest would be knowing that everything will play nice together right out of the box. Oddly enough, I had a reader email me with questions about what kit he should buy with the budget he had which happen to be right around what this kit cost. This is what happens: I have 2 strobes, (mostly set at the same level as my clients demand flat lighting), It doesn't matter if I use the Skyport transmitter or Pocket Wizards (just want to make it clear that this is not a triggering issue), I am shooting around 160 images in each set (about 10 sets a day), and during any of those sets one of the two strobes will decide to take 10-15 seconds to recycle, so I shoot without realising one hasn't recycled yet, and I just get a flash from the remaining strobe. Then further down the line, the same will happen with the alternate unit. If I wait for that 10-15 seconds, then I get the beep to indicate the strobe is charged and I can then shoot away until it decides to do it again down the line. I'd say in each 160 shots, this is happening 2-3 times between the 2 units, and they never both do it on the same shutter release, it appears totally random.
